Chicago Critics Film Festival – Blinded by the Light
Blinded by the Light is a movie that slaps a smile on your face from frame one and won’t leave until the credits roll. This is a fun, sweet, funny, beautiful love note to Bruce Springsteen, family, and growing up.
Based on a true story, the film is set in 1987 Great Britain, where and young teen named Javed (Viveik Kalra, in his debut film role) learns to live life, understand his family, and find his own voice through the music of Bruce Springsteen.
As soon as the film begins, we know exactly the time, place, and attitude of this Britain. Director Gurinder Chadha puts us right into the mix, showing us the unforgettable 80’s fashion, music, and attitude, while also showing us the effects of the new Margaret Thatcher era of Britain and the racism that plagued Pakistanis during this time. We are also introduced to Javed and his family and immediately understand the dynamic between them, showing them as a working-class family with an overbearing father. Chadha never forgets any of these elements, showcasing the family dynamic while living in this world and she does so by mixing perfectly timed humor and incredibly fun musical beats with the drama of Javed’s life.
Blinded by the Light is a universal coming of age story about the first time you heard the artist that changed your life forever. The artist that made you see the world differently. The artist that made you think about your life differently and gave you motivation to change your life and follow your dream. The artist in this film is Bruce Springsteen and the film highlights The Boss’ words and how they spoke to Javed and spoke to a generation. This is a beautiful testament to the power of music and how no matter where the music comes from, it can reach anyone.
Blinded by the Light is a joyous celebration that everyone will fall in love with.
